Observatory of Culture: ThinkFilM

Film Studies scholars from the University of Lodz are once again to cooperate with the Czech research team comprised of the students of the Charles University in Prague. As a part of the Erasmus+ program, the two groups have recently embarked on their joint international ThinkFilM project aimed at scrutinizing the ways in which film education functions in Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and Great Britain.

The project investigates the manners in which film education is carried out in Poland – both by public institutions and in the non-governmental sector. Our goal is to find out how film is taught at universities, in schools, culture centres, and in cinemas, museums and during film festivals. Moreover, we intend to reflect on the ways in which films are used as educational tools. The collected observations will serve as a starting point for creating in Prague a modern institution devoted to film education: Národní filmové muzeum – NaFilM (National Film Museum).

Objectives

The main objective of the project is to reflect on the manners in which film education is carried out in Poland – both by public institutions and in the non-governmental sector. Our goal is to find out how film is taught at universities, in schools, culture centres, and in cinemas, museums and during film festivals. Moreover, we intend to investigate the ways in which films are used as educational tools.

Our main objective is comprised of the following components:

  • summarizing various approaches towards the formal and informal film education across Europe;
  • joint work of a few partner teams that is to enable exchanging experiences on an international level;
  • making the research results and data available for a wide audience.
